IRI 2005 WORKSHOP

"New satellite and ground data for IRI, and comparison with regional models"

Observatori de l'Ebre
 Roquetes, Spain
 27 June - 1 July 2005

Organized by IRI Working Group

The Ebre Observatory is celebrating his Centennial and within this framework we are organizing the “Workshop IRI 2005”. The “International Reference Ionosphere” (IRI) is an international project promoted by “Committee on Space Research” (COSPAR) and “International Union of Radio Science” (URSI). These organizations formed a Working Group (IRIWG) to produce an empirical standard model of the terrestrial ionosphere, based on all available data sources (ground-based, satellites, rockets, …). Several steadily improved editions of the model have been released. For given location, time and date, IRI describes the electron density, electron temperature, ion temperature, and ion composition in the altitude range from about 50 km to about 2000 km; and also the electron content. It provides monthly averages in the non-auroral ionosphere for magnetically quiet conditions. The model is continuously updating, according to the availability of new data, research and validation results. These updates prepared yearly, specially during IRI Workshops as the one we will organize, and during the COSPAR general assemblies. Several extensions are planned, including models for the ion drift, description of the auroral and polar ionosphere, and improved consideration of magnetic storm effects.
